The Côte d'Azur: Our Living Classroom

Antibes: A coastal town with a historic stone wall overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the sea, with a backdrop of towering mountains in the distance.

When a child stands in the very place where history happened, the lesson stops being something they have to remember and becomes something they will never forget.

At ICS Côte d'Azur, we believe that education should not be confined to the four walls of a classroom. While our campus provides a dynamic and modern environment for inquiry, we treat the French Riviera as a "living text"—a rich, multi-layered landscape where our students can root their learning in real-world experiences.

From the Roman echoes of our local hills to the cutting-edge digital frontiers of Sophia Antipolis, our students don't just read about the world; they step out into it.

Every Unit, a New Discovery

In the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), inquiry is at the heart of everything we do. To make these abstract concepts tangible, every Unit of Inquiry includes a carefully curated trip to a local site, or an invitation for a guest speaker in the classroom. These aren't just "days out"; they are essential pieces of fieldwork designed to provoke curiosity and critical thinking.

  • Science & Biodiversity: Our younger learners might visit the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco to come face-to-face with marine conservation, or explore a working farm in Col de Vence.

  • Art & Aesthetics: With the heritage of the world’s greatest masters on our doorstep, students analyse form and colour at the Musée Fernand Léger in Biot or study Picasso’s legacy in Antibes and Vallauris.

  • History & Heritage: History comes alive during walks through the medieval fortress of Villeneuve-Loubet or while uncovering the industrial secrets of perfume-making at Fragonard in Grasse.

  • Innovation & Technology: Being situated in Europe's leading science park allows us to bridge the gap between school and the future. A visit to Terra Numerica in Sophia Antipolis transforms mathematical theory into a hands-on digital adventure.

  • Literacy: A published poet spends a day in the classrooms helping students create original poetry for our Poetry Slam.

The Residential Journey: Growing Independence

As our students progress through the school, their horizons literally expand. Our residential trip programme (classe découverte) is designed to build resilience, camaraderie, and a sense of self-reliance away from home. These trips typically last 4 nights from Monday to Friday and take place in the Spring term.

  • PY3 & PY4: These year groups typically enjoy regional adventures within the South of France—exploring the rugged beauty of the Mercantour National Park or the rich history of the Lérins Islands.

  • PY5 & PY6: As our eldest primary students prepare for the transition to secondary, they venture further afield. These capstone trips to cultural hubs like Paris or Italy allow students to apply their bilingual skills in new contexts and see themselves as true global citizens.

Language in the Real World

At ICS Côte d'Azur, we don't just learn French in books; we use it to explore. Whether our students are asking a scientist a question at Terra Numerica or listening to a guide explain a painting at the Musée Fernand Léger, they see that their bilingual skills have a real purpose. By hearing different voices and chatting with experts across the Riviera, our children grow in confidence. They move beyond simple classroom phrases and learn how to truly communicate, connect, and express their ideas in two languages.
