How we Introduce Coding without Screens in the KG Classroom
Jennifer Wallace
In our bilingual Early Years, our KG1 and KG2 classes had their very first introduction to coding this week, with STEAM coordinator Miss Gabrielle. They worked on a project called ‘Unplugged algorithmics that is designed to introduce kindergarten students to the basics of programming without using computers.
Children learn to give precise instructions to a character to control its movements on a grid. By combining these instructions, they create programmes that define complex paths for the character. As they progress, they will also practice writing and interpreting programs for different routes, thereby enriching their programming language with conditional instructions (if... then...).
They really enjoyed the activity and began developing key computational thinking skills such as sequencing, problem-solving, and logical reasoning. This hands-on introduction lays the foundation for coding and robotics education throughout the school.
As students progress through primary, they will continue building on these skills with more advanced programming challenges, robotics projects, and STEAM activities. Including the annual Globeducate France Robotics Challenge which takes place in May every year in Paris.
