The Treasures of Tuscany: Our PY5 & 6 Residential Trip Brings Learning to Life
Jennifer Wallace

Our PY5 and PY6 students recently returned from an unforgettable residential trip to Tuscany. These trips are so much more than sightseeing — they’re a time for our students to grow in independence, to enjoy being away from their parents, to build strong friendships, and to learn how to get along with one another in new environments. Their jam-packed schedule included visits to stunning sights, fascinating museums, historic churches, and underground ruins — and, of course, plenty of ice cream to keep their energy up!

Monday
The adventure began with a journey to the iconic city of Pisa, where students marvelled at the world-famous Leaning Tower and explored the stunning cathedral and dome. The day offered a fascinating introduction to Italian architecture and history.

Tuesday
A rainy day didn’t stop the group from immersing themselves in the beauty of Florence. They visited the historic Palazzo Vecchio and admired the grandeur of the city’s main square before enjoying a well-earned picnic in the park. The afternoon included a visit to the majestic Duomo and a stroll through the enchanting Boboli Gardens.

Wednesday
Wednesday was all about the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. In Vinci, students explored three museums dedicated to his inventions, artworks, and scientific discoveries. Later, the group headed to Pistoia to explore its fascinating underground world. Pistoia Sotterranea, beneath the historic Ospedale del Ceppo, revealed ancient aqueducts, centuries-old medical tools, and architectural layers that date back to medieval and even Roman times—a true journey through history beneath the streets!

Thursday
Back in Florence, students took time to pick up souvenirs before heading to the panoramic Piazzale Michelangelo for incredible views over the city. They enjoyed a peaceful lunch in the beautiful Rose Garden and rounded off the day with a visit to the Galileo Museum, deepening their understanding of science and astronomy.

Friday
The final stop was a visit to the charming town of Lucca, before beginning the journey home.

And of course, no trip to Italy would be complete without gelato—enjoyed daily, much to everyone’s delight!

This rich, hands-on experience brought history, science, and culture to life for our students, making memories they’ll treasure for years to come.
