Traditional French Schooling vs. The ICS Difference: Choosing a Modern Path

In the South of France, families are fortunate to have access to a long-standing tradition of academic rigour. However, as the world changes, so does the definition of a "complete" education. While traditional French schooling is world-renowned for its focus on core knowledge, many modern families are seeking a more updated, inquiry-based approach that combines academic excellence with a nurturing, bilingual environment.

At ICS Côte d’Azur, we bridge the gap between tradition and innovation through our unique 50/50 French-English immersion. While traditional methods often rely on a teacher-centred model—where knowledge is transmitted through repetition and memorisation—our IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) shifts the focus to the student. By moving from quiet, individual work to collaborative, agency-driven exploration, we ensure that students aren't just absorbing facts in two languages, but are learning how to apply them through critical thinking.

Central to our approach is what we call our "Culture of Care." In a traditional setting, the focus is often narrowed to academic accuracy and grading. At ICS, we believe that a child’s emotional and social wellbeing is the foundation of their success. Our modern curriculum focuses on the development of the whole child, integrating creativity and STEAM across all subjects. This ensures we foster an internationally minded environment where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and grow into confident global citizens.
