What is Vertical Learning in Preschool and Primary School?

At ICS Côte d'Azur bilingual school, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens when students of different ages work together. This approach, known as vertical learning, encourages collaboration, empathy, and leadership as older and younger students share their skills and perspectives. There are many opportunities in our preschool and primary school to make the most of vertical learning, in French and English of course!

Recently, our PY6 students joined KG2 for a geometry-themed treasure hunt around the school, while PY4 students helped PY2 practise their phonics and reading. These moments of cross-year learning created a real buzz of excitement—and plenty of smiles!

Soren from PY6 shared, “They were so cute, and much calmer than I thought they would be.” Jules added, “It was nice to learn their different personalities,” while Aymeline reflected, “We had to adjust how we spoke and gave instructions, as they needed more time for everything—but I really enjoyed it.”

Teacher Anaïs also noticed the benefits for both groups: “The PY2s love being with the older students and really enjoy the one-on-one attention. The PY4s took their roles as teachers very seriously and gave excellent feedback. It also means that at break times, they know each other a little better.”

Vertical learning at ICS is more than just teamwork—it’s about building community, confidence, and connection across year groups.
