Deciding when to start your child’s educational journey is one of the most significant choices a parent can make. At ICS Côte d'Azur, our 2-year-old Kindergarten programme (Toute Petite Section) offers young learners a nurturing, structured environment designed to spark curiosity, social growth, and language skills during a critical window of early brain development.

Whether you are considering a gradual transition with our flexible 2-day-a-week part-time option or full-time enrollment, here are answers to the most common questions parents ask about starting school at age two.

FAQ: Early Learning & Bilingual Education at Age 2

Q: Isn't 2 years old too young to start formal school?

Starting school at age two isn't about traditional sit-down academics, it's about structured exploration, play-based learning, and foundational holistic growth. In 2-Y-O KG, children engage across six core developmental domains:

  • Language Acquisition & Structuring: Developing communication skills naturally.
  • Gross Motor Skills: Physical activity, balance, and spatial movement.
  • Arts & Expression: Exploring creativity through visual arts, music, and movement.
  • Early Mathematical Tools: Building early logic and pattern recognition.
  • Exploring the World: Discovering living things, materials, and environment.
  • Time & Space Awareness: Navigating routines and social environments.
Developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky said « A child's greatest achievements are possible in play, achievements that tomorrow will become their basic level of real action. » In our 2-Y-O Classroom, our natural dual-language immersion in English and French enhances this foundation through dynamic role play centres and play-based activities that foster fine motor skills, vocabulary, empathy, and problem-solving, alongside outdoor learning that builds physical coordination, sensory awareness, and self-confidence. - Cécile Lemerre

Q: How does a 2-year-old learn in a bilingual environment?

Children at this age are uniquely equipped to absorb multiple languages simultaneously. Rather than teaching grammar and spellings, toddlers experience language through immersion, songs, routines, and social interactions in both English and French.

Second language acquisition at age two typically progresses through 5 natural stages:

  • Stage 1: Silent / Receptive Phase – Children dedicate time to listening and absorbing new vocabulary.
  • Stage 2: Early Production – Children start collecting words and forming early, short phrases.
  • Stage 3: Speech Emergence – Children combine accumulated words into short sentences.
  • Stage 4: Intermediate Fluency – Communicating with more complex sentences and connecting ideas.
  • Stage 5: Continued Fluency – Ongoing refinement of accuracy, complexity, and social conversation.
At two years old, a toddler’s brain is a sponge. At this pivotal age, children do not just learn a language, they live and breathe it with natural spontaneity. Bilingualism is not taught as an academic subject, it takes root right at the heart of their daily life, minute by minute, in a stimulating and nurturing immersive environment. - Morgane Scherlen

Q: What schedule options are available at ICS Côte d'Azur?

We recognise that every child adapts at their own pace. To support a gentle transition from home or nursery care, we offer both part-time (2 days per week) and full-time placements. This allows families to choose the rhythm that best fits their child's emotional readiness and family routines.

Q: Does my 2-year-old need to be completely toilet trained before starting?

No, your child does not need to be out of nappies to join our 2-year-old programme. We understand that potty training is a natural developmental milestone that happens at each child's own pace.

To support this transition, our classrooms are equipped with child-sized toilets designed specifically for toddlers. We kindly ask parents to provide pull-up nappies, as they allow children to practice pulling their own trousers/shorts and nappies up and down, fostering self-reliance, confidence, and independence during everyday routines.
