Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our PY5 and PY6 students have been out and about exploring local history spots, the perfect way to end their last PYP unit.

At ICS, our trips are always purposeful, designed to make learning come to life and deeply root our students in the rich history and culture of the Côte d’Azur.

PY5: To conclude their recent history unit on art and architecture, PY5 visited the Villa Fragonard and the Musée de Provence in Grasse. This trip allowed students to observe firsthand the historical methods used to decorate homes, a core focus of their classroom studies.

During the visit, students examined trompe l’oeil wall paintings in detail, analysing how artists used perspective to create three-dimensional illusions. They also studied a variety of historic furniture, noting the materials and styles prevalent in the region during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The excursion concluded with an interactive workshop where students created a carte à dessin (drawing folder). This practical activity provided a useful connection to the artistic techniques discussed throughout the unit.

PY6: To end their PYP unit on the Second World War, PY6 students visited the fortified site at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Located 25 meters underground, this facility allowed students to visualise the logistical and military organisation of the period.

The visit covered the entire infrastructure, including the tunnels, hospital, lookout points, defense blocks, and the command post. Students were able to examine original weaponry and military dress, providing a concrete insight into the living conditions of the 354 soldiers who manned the fort. This immersion directly illustrated the daily operations of such a structure during the conflict.
